At Eastwind Community Church, we are committed to providing
and helping people dis
cover
opportunities for expressing our faith in action.
Every year Eastwind takes a mission trip to one of our two global missions
locations: Mexico or Kenya. The past two years we have gone to Kenya, but
have not been able to go to Mexico due to security concerns. However, as
a result of a research trip in January, we have learned the security situation
in the area in Mexico has significantly improved. We also discovered that
there is a real need for a school expansion in the indigenous mig
rant
worker camp where we serve.
As a result we have decided to return to Mexico this year! We will be going to Mexico on August 14 with planned return to the US on August 19. We will be expanding the small building that is used as a school for the children. This trip is estimated to be around $750 per person (that is all inclusive and the key variable is the airfare). We hope that lots of you can come with us! If you are thinking of going, contact Mark Russell at mark@markrussell.org and come to our informational meeting Sunday, May 16th after the second service.
Unfortunately, given that it is so expensive for people to travel to Africa, it is not feasible for us to conduct mission trips to both Mexico and Kenya every year. Therefore, we have decided to move our trip to Kenya and return to Mexico this Summer instead. Our plan moving forward will be to go to Mexico on even years (2010, 2012, etc..) and Kenya on odd years (2011, 2013, etc...). If you want to go to Kenya next year, start saving now! If you save $250 a month you will have resources to go next year.
We
are committed to getting clean water to the rural poor in Kenya. Last year
our Eastwind team began a construction project of a water tank that catches
rainwater for a small village in Kenya. This product has been completed
and is providing clean water for the citizens. However, much work remains
to be done.
As a result of our clean water offering in December, we have $6800 to go towards providing more clean water. We are in the process of determining the most effective way to use that money. We are working with Genesis World Mission, a Boise-based missions organization, that is developing health care initiatives, inclusive of clean water. They are forming a strategic alliance with several different organizations. Working through this partnership, we will have the capacity of leveraging our resources with likeminded organizations enabling us to do things that we could never do on our own. Eastwind member, Tracy Haworth, is the International Director for Genesis, and she will be conducting on site research in the region in April.
We believe that we are in position to be the part of a work that helps thousands of rural Kenyans living in poverty.
Eastwind
has partnered with Touch Africa International in Nairobi, Kenya to help
advance the education possibilities for children. Building on a partnership
established during our first mission trip to Kenya in 2008, the two organizations
have joined together to focus on an impoverished population near Kaloleni
in
Kenya.
Education is a significant privilege for the less fortunate, vulnerable
or orphaned children.
We started a child sponsorship program, to allow people like you the opportunity to provide funds for these children, so they can enjoy all the benefits of attending school. A monthly sponsorship will cover four basic needs; needs we too often take for granted: supervision by Touch Africa, private school fees and tuition, school uniforms and a lunch program. All of these children have one thing in common. Each wants to get an education and do something with his or her life despite the hardships faced. If this kind of sponsership program appeals to you, please see our current posting of children who are ready to be sponsored. CLICKING HERE
